How to Keep Your Car in Peak Condition This Summer
Most drivers associate car trouble with winter – flat batteries, icy roads, and sluggish starts. But summer brings its own set of challenges, and for many vehicles, the warmer months can be just as demanding. From overheating engines to deteriorating tyres, summer car maintenance is something every driver should have on their radar before the temperatures start to climb.
Whether you’re planning a long road trip, the daily school run, or heading out to a classic car show, this guide covers everything you need to know about summer car care to keep your vehicle running safely and reliably all season long.
How to Keep Your Car Cool in Summer: Cooling System Checks
Your engine works hard in hot weather, and the cooling system is your first line of defence against overheating. High ambient temperatures mean your engine has to work harder to stay within its operating range – and a cooling system running on old coolant or with a small leak can quickly become a serious problem.
Before the summer heat sets in, check the following:
- Coolant level – check it’s between the min and max markers on the reservoir. Never open the cap when the engine is warm.
- Coolant condition – over time coolant degrades and loses its effectiveness. If it looks discoloured or murky, it’s due for a flush and refill.
- Radiator and hoses – look for signs of leaks, cracks, or bulging hoses. A small issue now can become a roadside breakdown in August.
If your temperature gauge creeps into the red, or your air vents start blowing warm air, don’t ignore it. Pull over safely and let the engine cool before investigating further.
Air Conditioning – More Than Just Comfort
Your air con does more than keep you comfortable on a hot day. It also helps demist the windscreen quickly and reduces driver fatigue on long summer journeys. If it’s blowing warm air or has lost pressure, it likely needs a re-gas. We covered this in detail in our recent post: Air Con Re-Gas and Service – everything you need to know.
Air con systems naturally lose around 10–15% of their refrigerant each year, so even if nothing seems obviously wrong it’s worth having it checked and re-gassed every couple of years. It’s a quick, affordable job that makes a real difference to summer driving comfort and safety.
Tyres – Why Summer Heat Is a Bigger Risk Than You Think
Hot road surfaces put significantly more strain on tyres than cold ones. Under-inflated tyres are particularly vulnerable in summer – heat causes the air inside to expand further, raising internal pressure and increasing the risk of a blowout, especially at motorway speeds.
Before summer driving, check:
- Tyre pressure – always check cold (before driving) and refer to your vehicle handbook for the correct figures. Don’t forget the spare.
- Tread depth – the UK legal minimum is 1.6mm, but 3mm is recommended for safe stopping distances. Use a tread depth gauge or the 20p test.
- Sidewall condition – look for bulges, cracks, or cuts. Heat accelerates rubber degradation, so even tyres with good tread may have compromised sidewalls.
Tyre condition is also one of the most common reasons for MOT failures. If you’re not confident checking them yourself, tyre condition is covered as part of every service we carry out.
Oil and Fluids – Don’t Overlook the Basics
Engine oil keeps everything lubricated and running smoothly, but heat degrades it faster. If you’re overdue a car service or your oil looks dark and gritty on the dipstick, get it changed before summer. Running on degraded oil under hot conditions puts real strain on your engine.
While you’re checking oil, top up your other fluid levels too – brake fluid, power steering fluid, and screen wash. Screen wash gets far more use in summer than people expect, with insects, dust, and road grime building up quickly on longer drives.
Battery – Summer Takes Its Toll Too
It’s widely known that cold weather affects car batteries, but heat is actually harder on them long-term. High temperatures accelerate internal corrosion and cause battery fluid to evaporate, shortening overall lifespan significantly.
If your battery is more than three years old, or you’ve noticed slow starts or electrical gremlins, it’s worth having it load-tested before summer. A failing battery rarely gives much warning – and the last place you want to find out is a hot car park with a boot full of luggage.
Classic Car Owners – A Few Extra Things to Watch
Summer is prime season for classic car owners – shows, cruises, and sunny Sunday drives. But older vehicles have their own summer vulnerabilities that are worth taking seriously. We’ve covered classic car care in depth in our guide to proper classic car storage, but here are the key summer-specific things to watch:
- Fuel system – older fuel lines, seals, and carburettors can be more sensitive to heat. Vapour lock (where fuel vaporises before reaching the engine) is more common in hot weather. Check for any fuel weeps or smells before heading out.
- Rubber seals and hoses – rubber degrades in UV light and heat over time. Inspect door seals, coolant hoses, and rubber components for cracking or perishing.
- Paintwork and bodywork – prolonged sun exposure can fade paint and dry out chrome. A good wax before summer helps protect the finish during show season.
- Cooling system – many classics run smaller, older radiators not designed for modern stop-start traffic. On a hot day in a queue, keep a close eye on the temperature gauge.
If your classic is coming out of storage for the summer season, a pre-season inspection is always a worthwhile investment. Find out more about our classic car maintenance and servicing.
