Antifreeze Check Before Winter
Is your car ready for winter? As the colder months approach across Taplow, Maidenhead and the surrounding area, now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is prepared. One essential check that’s often overlooked is your car’s antifreeze.
At L&J Vehicle Specialist, we recommend booking an antifreeze check before temperatures start to drop. It’s a quick, simple preventative measure that could save you from expensive engine repairs and an unexpected winter breakdown.
What Does Antifreeze Do?
Antifreeze is a concentrated fluid that’s mixed with water to create your engine’s coolant. It plays a vital role in keeping your engine running at the correct temperature all year round.
Despite its name, antifreeze isn’t just important in winter. It also:
- Stops the coolant inside your engine from freezing in cold weather
- Raises the boiling point to help prevent your engine overheating in warmer months
- Contains additives that protect your cooling system against corrosion and scale
In winter, its most important job is making sure the liquid circulating through your engine doesn’t turn to ice.
Antifreeze vs Coolant – What’s the Difference?
The two terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, antifreeze is the concentrate, and coolant is the ready-to-use mix of antifreeze and water (often around 50/50). When we talk about checking your antifreeze, we’re checking that your coolant contains enough antifreeze to protect your engine.
What Happens If Your Antifreeze Isn’t Protecting Your Engine?
When temperatures fall below freezing, coolant without enough antifreeze protection can freeze and expand, potentially causing serious damage. This can lead to:
- Cracked engine blocks or cylinder heads – frozen coolant expands and can cause costly internal engine damage.
- Radiator damage – ice can split the radiator and damage other cooling system components.
- Damaged hoses and seals – freezing temperatures put extra pressure on vulnerable parts.
- Engine overheating – low coolant or a poorly maintained cooling system can cause overheating, even in winter.
- Unexpected breakdowns – cooling system problems can leave you stranded when you least expect it.
Signs Your Antifreeze or Coolant Needs Attention
Book a check if you notice any of the following:
- The coolant level in the expansion tank is below the MIN mark
- A coolant or temperature warning light on your dashboard (see our guide to dashboard warning lights)
- The temperature gauge running higher than usual
- A sweet smell from the engine bay, or steam from under the bonnet
- Puddles of coloured fluid under the car
- Coolant that looks rusty, cloudy or has bits floating in it
- Your heater blowing cold air even once the engine has warmed up
Why Is an Antifreeze Check Important?
Over time, coolant loses some of its protective properties. Leaks, or topping up with plain water, can also leave the antifreeze concentration too low – and you can’t tell how strong it is just by looking at it.
An antifreeze check makes sure your vehicle has the right level of protection for the colder months ahead. At L&J Vehicle Specialist, we can:
- Test the antifreeze concentration and freezing protection
- Check the coolant level and condition
- Inspect the radiator, hoses and cooling system for leaks or wear
- Advise whether a top-up or coolant change is needed
It’s also important to remember that different vehicles require specific types of coolant. Using the wrong antifreeze, or mixing incompatible types, can cause problems within the cooling system – so it’s always best to let a professional advise.
How to Check Your Antifreeze Level at Home
You can carry out a quick visual check yourself between visits:
- Park on level ground and wait until the engine is completely cold. Never open the coolant cap on a hot engine – the system is pressurised and hot coolant can cause serious burns.
- Open the bonnet and find the coolant expansion tank – usually a translucent plastic bottle with MIN and MAX markings (check your handbook if unsure).
- Check the level sits between the two marks.
- If it’s low, top up with the coolant type specified for your vehicle – and if you find yourself topping up regularly, there may be a leak that needs investigating and repairing.
A level check only tells you how much coolant there is, not how much protection it gives. That’s why a professional antifreeze check before winter is worthwhile.
Don’t Wait Until the First Frost!
Many motorists only think about antifreeze once temperatures have already dropped below freezing – by which point it could be too late.
Taking preventative action now helps protect your engine, reduces the risk of winter breakdowns and avoids unnecessary repair bills. An antifreeze check is easy to add to a car service or vehicle health check, and it’s a key part of our winter MOT prep checklist. For more cold-weather advice, see our full list of vehicle safety checks for winter.
Whether you drive a modern everyday car, a classic car, or a vehicle that spends long periods in storage, making sure your antifreeze provides adequate protection is an important part of winter maintenance.
